O'Connell Earns Regional and National Recognition
Sophomore Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) garnered conference, regional and national recognition after helping the Newbury College women's basketball team to a 2-1 week, averaging 12.6 points and 22.3 rebounds. In addition to earning the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), Player of the Week O'Connell was named to the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Honor Roll.
O'Connell gained national notoriety for the second consecutive season, being Division III's leading rebounder averaging 16.7 per game. She also ranks in the Top 10 in the nation with seven double-doubles on the season, placing her in a three-way tie for sixth.
The second year center from Quincy reached two milestones last week. In the Nighthawks' 82-74 victory, O'Connell ripped down a game-high 27, surpassing her previous game-high of 23, which she has recorded three times – including twice this season. One of those times came in Saturday afternoon's 71-63 victory against Becker, where she picked up her 500th career board putting her at 513.
