Falcons Soar Over Nighthawks
New Haven, CT – Albertus Magnus College atoned for last season’s two-point loss in the 2009-10 season opener at Hellenic, by defeating the Newbury College women’s basketball team, 85-61, Monday evening in New Haven, Conn. Falcons freshman guard Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) drained 12 of her game-high 23 points to paved the way the Falcons third victory of the season.
Carrero and senior forward Bianca Brown (West Haven, Conn./Career) provided the Falcons with a balanced attack on offense as they went into the locker room with the 24-point, 49-25, lead. The second half was much of the same as Albertus never relinquished the lead to keep the spread at 24.
Brown registered a double-double in the victory, tallying 19 points while pulling down 10 rebound while five Falcons dished out at least four assists in the victory.
The Nighthawks kept battling as sophomore center Catherine O’Connell (Quincy, Mass./North Quincy) recorded her 400th career rebound, with a game-high 22 boards on the night in addition to her 11 points. Senior guard Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) led all Newbury scorers with a team-high 18 points and is 20 points shy of 700 in her career.
With the victory, the Albertus Magnus improves to 3-2, 0-0 GNAC while Newbury fall to 0-5, 0-0 NECC. The Nighthawks will return to the hard-court on Thursday December 2nd against Gordon College at 7:00pm in Wenham, Mass.
