Nighthawks Enter Post-Season With Win Over Wildcats
The Newbury College women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a comeback victory over Wheelock College, 65-57, Saturday afternoon. Freshman Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) led the way with her 17th double-double of the season, tallying 16 points and 19 rebounds.
Before the game, the Nighthawks honored seniors Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) and Rashawna Wynn (Baltimore, MD/Southwestern) for their four years of service to the program.
The Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard first with a 7-3 run to begin the contest but the Nighthawks battled back. Junior Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) drained 14 of her team-high 17 points in the first including netting two free throws at the end of the half to cut the deficit to three.
Newbury returned from the locker room at the start of the second and outscored Wheelock, 33-22. Freshman Jalisa Fields (Bronx, NY/St. Michael Academy) dropped nine of her 10 points in the half. Junior Amy Chen (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) was also solid in 12 minutes on the court.
Wildcat senior Sarah Brown (Plainville, CT/Plainville) led all scorers with a game-high 20 points while teammate freshman Keneisha Milton (Randolph, MA/Wayland) recorded a double-double, tallying 11 points and 13 boards.
The Nighthawks finished the regular season with a 7-9 conference record and 9-13 overall as the Wildcats end the season at 4-21, 3-13 in the NECC.
