Nighthawks Defeat Mariners
The Newbury College women's basketball team overcame an 11-0 deficit, to begin the contest, to defeat Mitchell College, 65-54, Saturday afternoon. Junior Ashley Montiero (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) paved the way to victory, netting a team-high 17 points.
After the Mariners jumped out to the early lead, the Nighthawks answered with a 12-0 run of their own sparked by a trey from senior Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) six minutes into the game. Spreading the ball around throughout much of the first half, Newbury took a 28-18 lead into the locker room.
The Mariners mounted a valiant come-back attempt in the second half behind sophomore Destiney Harris (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) who drained 19 of her game-high 24 points in the second. However, it was not enough, as Monteiro was red-hot from beyond the arc netting 15 of her 17 points from long range.
Teammate Jalisa Fields (Bronx, NY/St. Michael Academy) was also solid in the victory, recording a double-double, tallying 12 points while ripping down 12 rebounds, while first year center, Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) had yet another double-double with 17 rebounds and 16 points. Mitchell senior Jennifer Iglesias (Waterbury, CT/Sacred Heart) rounded out the five players in double figures with 10 points.
With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 7-9, 5-5 NECC while the Mariners fall to 7-10, 7-4 NECC on the season. Newbury returns to action when they travel to Becker College Tuesday February 9th to face the Hawks at 7:00pm. Earlier this season, the Nighthawks defeated the Hawks, 76-74, in overtime on January 12th.
