Eagles Victory Over Nighthawks Clinches NECC Regular Season Title
The Newbury College women's basketball team was defeated by Daniel Webster College Wednesday evening, 75-58. Junior Vanessa Bosques (North Windham, CT/Windham) recorded a double-double, tallying 17 points and 12 rebounds, as the Eagles clinch their first New England Collegiate Conference regular season championship.
Bosques helped the Eagles jump out in front early, netting 11 points in the first half but junior Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) and sophomore Shayla White (Dorchester, MA/Wellesley) kept the Nighthawks in the game. Monteiro and White both reached double figures in the half, tallying 10 and 12 points, respectively as the Eagles took a five point lead into the locker room.
In the second, Daniel Webster junior Joyce Chagan (Boothbay Harbor, ME/Boothbay) was red-hot from the field, draining 17 of her game-high 23 points. Teammate sophomore Alycia Gervais (Windham, CT/Windham) added nine points to finish with 17 points while freshman Ariel Guzman (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) rounded out the Eagles in double figures with 10.
Despite the loss, Monteiro led the way for Newbury recording a team-high 17 points while White followed up with 15. Senior Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) had a solid night, rounding out the Nighthawks in double digits with 10 points while dishing out a team-high five assists and tallying three steals.
With the loss, Newbury falls to 6-8 in the conference and 8-12 overall while Daniel Webster improves to 19-5 (14-1 in the NECC). The Nighthawks return to the court tomorrow February 18th to face Mitchell College at 7:00 pm. They defeated the Mariners at home 65-54 on February 6th.
