Women's Basketball Falls to Becker
Leicester, Mass. - With all five starters in double figures the Becker Hawks defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 100-69 and avenged and early season overtime loss in New England Collegiate Conference women's basketball action tonight.
The Hawks hit the .500 mark in conference action improving to 6-15 (6-6 NECC) and Newbury drops to 7-10 (5-6 NECC).
The Hawks built a 15-5 lead in the first half when they came out of the blocks firing hitting 6 of their first 8 shots over four minutes. The teams traded baskets and the Hawks still held a ten point advantage 23-13 halfway through the half. Becker outscored the Nighthawks 30-15 the rest of the way to take a 53-29 lead into the break. Shannon Tibbetts (Warren, Mass.) (14 points) and Heidi Miller (Sanbornton, NH) (15 points) combined for 29 of the Becker first half points. Newbury was led by Katelyn Mark (Quincy, Mass.) and Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.) who both scored seven.
Hawks' Senior Courtney Fiske (Westfield, Mass.) scored twenty points, Tibbetts finished with double double, 23 points and 10 assists and Miller had another double double with 26 points and a game high 12 rebounds. The trio finished with 69 of the teams 100 points. Becker's two other starters Kristina Desnoyers (Adams, Mass.) and Katelyn Cavanaugh (Belchertown, Mass.) both chipped in 10 points.
The Nighthawks were led by Mark who scored a game high 27 points and Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) who came off the bench to score 11 points in 20 minutes of action.
Becker outshot Newbury 50% to 42% and outrebounded 46-26.
