Newbury Out-rebounds Wheelock en Route to Win

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Newbury College had two players with
double-doubles and four players in double digits as the Nighthawks
downed Wheelock College 62-43 Thursday night in New England
Collegiate Conference play. Freshman Jalisa Fields (Bronx, NY) led
Newbury with a game high 18 points and 16 rebounds while fellow
Freshman forward Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, Mass.)
grabbed 15 boards and scored ten points as head coach Katie
Greene's team improved to 6-9 on the season and 4-5 in the NECC.
Wheelock falls to 4-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
Elise Ordile (Waltham, Mass.) and Joy Holiday (Milford, Mass.)
were the only Wildcats in double-digits, each scoring 14 points. It
was any body's game throughout much of the first half, with five
ties and five lead changes in the first 15 minutes of play, but
Newbury went on a 13-4 run to end the half, highlighted by five
points from Katelyn Mark (Quincy, Mass.), who finished the night
with 17 points and six assists.
In the second half, the Wildcats trailed by 14 points and were
able to come up with seven defensive stops, keeping the Nighthawks
off the scoreboard for five and a half minutes, but a rough night
of shooting prevented them from closing the gap. Shooting troubles
plagued the Wildcats all night, as they finished the game shooting
less than 25 percent from the field.
Newbury outrebounded Wheelock 52-32 and used a strong inside game,
scoring 36 points in the paint to Wheelock's eight. Ashley Monteiro
was also in double figures for Newbury, with 11 points and four
steals.
Sarah Brown (Plainville, Conn.) had two blocks and four steals for
the Wildcats who return to action Saturday when they visit Lesley
University on Saturday for a 5:00 conference game while Newbury
hosts Mitchell College Saturday at noon.
