Nighthawks Surpass Mountaineers For 2nd Straight Win

The Newbury College women's basketball team won their second consecutive game after defeating Southern Vermont College, 72-55, Thursday evening. Freshman center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) led the way for the Nighthawks with her sixth double-double of season, tallying 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Newbury received solid production from up and down their line-up with five players reaching double figures in the game. Junior guard Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) helped the Nighthawks take an eight point lead into the half draining four of nine from beyond the arc for 12 of her 15 first half points. The Cambridge native would finish the game with a game-high of 16 points to tie senior guard Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) who also had 16 in the victory.
Mark was two rebounds and assists shy of a triple-double, ripping down eight boards and dishing out eight assists in the win. Sophomore Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) rounded out the five Nighthawks in double digits tallying 14 points.
Freshman Christine Henry (Essex, VT/Essex Junction) recorded a double-double for the Mountaineers in the loss totaling a team-high 15 points and 13 rebounds while teammate sophomore Alyssa Davis (West Burke, VT/Lyndon Institute) also netted 15 points.
With the win the Nighthawks improve to 2-1 in the conference and 3-4 overall while the Mountaineers fall to 1-10 on the season (0-4 in the NECC). Newbury will return to the hard-court on Saturday when they host Lesley University (3-7; 2-1 NECC) in the second game of a men's-women's double-header at 2:00pm.
