O'Connell Earns Rookie of the Year; Mark Named Honorable Mention
ATTLEBORO, Mass. Eight of the nine sponsored programs were represented on 2009-10 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Womens Basketball All-Conference Team, it was announced today by Commissioner Del Malloy. In addition to the All-NECC honors, three separate major individual award winners and the team sportsmanship award were also voted upon and selected this week.

Mitchell advances with 73-65 win over Newbury
NEW LONDON, Conn. The Mitchell College womens basketball team withstood a second-half charge by Newbury College to pull out a 73-65 victory on Tuesday night in the first round of the NECC Championship at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Newbury (9-14 overall) also finished with four players in double figures. Junior Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, Mass.) and freshman Catherine OConnell (Quincy, Mass.) each netted 12 points while senior Katelyn Mark (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) added 10 apiece.

O'Connell Grabs Final NECC Rookie of the Week
Newbury College freshman center Catherine OConnell (Quincy, Mass.) nabs the final weekly rookie honors. The Nighthawks finished 1-2 on the week, grabbing the sixth and final seed in the tournament. For the week, she shot 45% (13-for-29) from the field and 56% (5-for-9) from the line.

2009-2010 NECC Womens Basketball Championship Pairings Announced
ATTLEBORO, Mass.Daniel Webster College has claimed the top seed for the 2009-2010 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Womens Basketball Championship, which begins with quarterfinal matchups on campus sites the evening of Tuesday, February 23. The Eagles (20-5 overall) earned the top spot in the upcoming NECC tournament after posting a 15-1 conference record. Newbury College (9-13, 7-9) has claimed the #6 seed and will travel to #3 Mitchell on Tuesday, February 23 at 7:00 PM

Nighthawks Enter Post-Season With Win Over Wildcats
The Newbury College womens basketball team closed out the regular season with a comeback victory over Wheelock College, 65-57, Saturday afternoon. Freshman Catherine OConnell (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) led the way with her 17th double-double of the season, tallying 16 points and 19 rebounds. Before the game, the Nighthawks honored seniors Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) and Rashawna Wynn (Baltimore, MD/Southwestern) for their four years of service to the program.

Mariners Hold Off Newbury for 62-51 Win
NEW LONDON, Conn. The Mitchell College womens basketball team held off a strong second-half charge from Newbury College to pull out a 62-51 victory on Thursday night at the Yarnall Athletic Center. Newbury shot 30 percent from the floor and held a 53-50 edge on the glass. Catherine OConnell (Quincy, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds and contributed seven points.

The Newbury College womens basketball team was defeated by Daniel Webster College Wednesday evening, 75-58. Junior Vanessa Bosques (North Windham, CT/Windham) recorded a double-double, tallying 17 points and 12 rebounds, as the Eagles clinch their first New England Collegiate Conference regular season championship. Despite the loss, Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA) led the way for Newbury recording a team-high 17 points.

The Southern Vermont College womens basketball team fought hard but came short losing to the visiting New England Collegiate Conference Nighthawks of Newbury College 65-54 Saturday night. It was senior night at SVC and forward Rachel Pannell had a double-double with a team-high 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in her final game on the Field House court. Sophomore guard Morganna Machado led Newbury with a game-high 19 points.

Women's Basketball Falls to Becker
Leicester, Mass. With all five starters in double figures the Becker Hawks defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 100-69 and avenged and early season overtime loss in New England Collegiate Conference womens basketball action tonight. The Nighthawks were led by Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA) who scored a game high 27 points and Morganna Machado (Attleboro, Mass.) who came off the bench to score 11 points in 20 minutes of action.

Fields Earns NECC Rookie of the Week
Newbury College freshman forward Jalisa Fields (Bronx, N.Y.) helped the Nighthawks to a 2-1 week including two NECC victories over Wheelock (62-43) and Mitchell (65-54) and a tough non-conference loss versus Suffolk (71-53). Fields tallied back-to-back double-doubles including 18 points and 16 rebounds against the Wildcats and came back to produce 14 points and 12 boards against the Mariners. For the week, she shot 57% (13-for-23) from the field and 63% (5-for-8) from the line.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. Newbury College had two players with double-doubles and four players in double digits as the Nighthawks downed Wheelock College 62-43 Thursday night in New England Collegiate Conference play. Freshman Jalisa Fields (Bronx, NY) led Newbury with a game high 18 points and 16 rebounds while fellow freshman forward Catherine OConnell (Quincy, Mass.) grabbed 15 boards and scored ten points as head coach Katie Greenes team improved to 6-9 on the season and 4-5 in the NECC. Wheelock falls to 4-14 overall and 3-6 in conference play.

OConnell Makes Newbury History
Newbury College Womens Basketball Center, Catherine OConnell (Quincy, MA), made history this week earning both NECC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, NEWBA (New England Womens Basketball Assoc) Rookie of the Week and Division 3 hoops Team of the Week (Center). OConnell was the first Newbury Womens Basketball player to ever be named to all 4 awards in one single week and the first to be named to the D 3 hoops Team of the Week in school history.

Boston, Mass. The Suffolk University Womens Basketball (10-8 overall) team picked up their third win in a row on Monday evening. The Rams topped the Newbury College Nighthawks (5-9 overall) by a score of 71-53. Freshman Catherine OConnell (Quincy, Mass.) played a strong game for the Nighthawks as she led all rebounders with 16 boards and also picked up 14 points as she dominated the paint.

For the first time in five years, the Newbury College womens basketball team defeated Rivier College, 62-61, Tuesday evening. The Nighthawks atoned for last years 100-48 loss to the Raiders with three players reaching double figures and staved off a second half Rivier comeback attempt to take the one point victory.

Newbury dropped to 4-7 (3-4 NECC) following the loss. Newburys Katelyn Mark (QUINCY, Mass./North Quincy) scored 11 of her team-high 18 points in the first half. She hit three three-point attempts and finished the game 5-of-7 from long range.
