Elms Blazes Past Newbury in NECC Opener

The Newbury College women's basketball team dropped their New England Collegiate Conference opener to Elms College, 73-55, Saturday afternoon. Blazers sophomore Carolyn Talmadge (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) nearly recorded a triple-double tallying 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to lead Elms to their second victory of the season.
It was the Elms bench that made the difference in the game after much of the contest remained close until the Blazers started to pull away late. Behind senior Annie Dunnack (Mansfield Center, CT/E.O. Smith) the Elms bench outscored the Newbury bench 37-8. The Connecticut native was a perfect four-for-four from the field in the second including two treys, for 16 of her game-high 23 points. Teammate freshman Jen Normandie (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) rounded out the three Blazers in double figures with 10.
Freshman center Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) recorded her fourth double-double of the season netting 11 points while ripping down 12 boards. Junior Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) led the way for the Nighthawks with a team-high 17 points.
With the loss the Nighthawks fall to 1-4 on the season and are 0-1 in conference play while the Blazers improve to 1-8. Newbury will return to the hard-court on Tuesday January 12 when they host the Hawks of Becker College at 7:00pm.
