OConnell Makes Newbury History

Newbury College Women's Basketball Center, Catherine O'Connell (Quincy, MA), made history this week earning both NECC Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, NEWBA (New England Women's Basketball Assoc) Rookie of the Week and Division 3 hoops Team of the Week (Center). O'Connell was the first Newbury Women's Basketball player to ever be named to all 4 awards in one single week and the first to be named to the D 3 hoops Team of the Week in school history.
O'Connell erupted for 18.5 points and 21 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Nighthawks. The Center converted 59% (16-27) of her attempts from the field and also added three blocked shots. Her first double-double of the week came in a 62-61 win over Rivier College on Tuesday. The Nighthawks were trailing 61-60 in the final last seconds when O'Connell knocked down a pair of free throws to propel Newbury to its first win over the Raiders in five years. She finished with 18 points, 19 rebounds, four steals and two blocks in the game. O'Connell then tallied 19 points and a career best 23 rebounds in the Nighthawks 73-68 loss to NECC Conference leaders Daniel Webster College on Saturday.
