Nighthawks Drop Tough Decision to Engineers
Newbury College can take a lot from tonight's 54-46 loss to visiting MIT. While still looking for their first win, the Nighthawks made noteworthy progress - boasting 54 rebounds, 31 defensive and commanding performances by Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) and Kendra Bannister (Stafford, VA/Brook Point).
Mark has been a pillar of consistency for Newbury - averaging 11.4 ppg and 4.8 rpg. In tonight's contest, she stayed true to form recording 11 points and seven rebounds, in addition to three assists.
Bannister had a stellar performance - recording the first double-double of her collegiate career with 15 points and 14 rebounds. In the first half alone, she was two for three from behind the three-point line, ripped down seven rebounds, and recorded two blocks.
MIT was led by Jamie Simmons (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) and Amy Marshall (San Marcos, TX/San Marcos) who put up 16 and 11 points, respectively. Marshall also posted 12 boards on the game, second only to teammate Cheryl Kwinn (Monroe, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) who led all players with 15.
Newbury travels to Elms College on Thursday, January 15, 2009 with hopes that their continued improvement and persistence will pay off against the Blazers.
