Nighthawks Drop Home Opener to Amcats
The Newbury College Women's Basketball team dropped their home opener tonight to the Anna Maria Amcats, losing by a score of 76-50. Turnovers proved fatal for the Nighthawks as they committed 35 on the game - 22 in the first half alone leading to 24 Amcat points off turnovers.
Anna Maria was led by freshman guard Amanda Hevy (North Brookfield, MA/North Brookfield) who led all scorers with 22 points, which included five three pointers. Also executing well were fellow freshman Samantha Ashton (Worcester, MA/Burncoat) who chipped in 14 points of her own and junior Maggie Sielawa (Webster, MA/Bartlett) who ripped down eight total rebounds (five defensive), while adding six points and four steals.
Newbury began both halves with an offensive spark; but could not settle into their rhythm. Morganna Machado (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro), Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy), and Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge & Latin) dominated the Nighthawk offense recording 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Jessica Graus (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) battled for ten total rebounds - five on each end of the floor.
The Nighthawks look to improve their record when they travel to Curry College on Saturday, December 6, 2008 to round out play before the Holiday Break.
