Christine Grenache enters her fifth season as head softball coach at Newbury College. Since her arrival in 2007, Grenache has revamped the Nighthawk softball program with emphasis on both recruiting and player development that saw her receive the Association of Division III Independents Co-Coach of the Year award in 2007 and a second place finish in the Independent Tournament in 2008.
In 2009-2010, Grenache led the Nighthawks to an overall record of 12-23, at ten-win gain from 2008-2009. Newbury faced a competitive 38 game schedule; which included traveling to ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex for spring training, as well as a 16 game New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) schedule. After claiming the final playoff spot, the Nighthawks lost in the first round leaving plenty of incentive for 2010-2011. For their commitment to the values of the game, the Nighthawks were given the NECC Sportsmanship Award at the culmination of the season.
Last spring, the Nighthawks struggled to gain any momentum in the inaugural year of New England Collegiate Conference play. The squad finished with an overall record of 2-28 (2-14 NECC) which included the program’s second annual spring trip to Florida.
In 2008, Grenache led the softball program to a 13-24 overall record and a second place finish in the Association of Division III Independents Championship Tournament. Here, the Nighthawks eliminated four of the other five competitors en route to the championship game highlighted by a 9-8 come from behind, walk-off victory over University of Maine – Presque Isle in the semifinals.
During the 2007 season, Grenache brought immediate life to a program who had finished 0-22 prior to her arrival. The Nighthawks finished a program best overall record of 11-10 and qualified for the Association of Division III Independents Championship Tournament. For her efforts, she was named national DIII Independent Co-Coach of the Year. In just those two seasons, five of Grenache’s players were named to the Division III All-Conference team.
In the offseason, Grenache furthers her commitment to athletics and the Newbury softball program by participating in various camps and clinics around the country and serving as the head coach of the 18U Central MA Firecracker Brats softball program. Over the past two seasons, the Brats have accumulated an overall record of 45-32-3. Grenache also gives individual and group softball instruction at AtBats Training Center in Boxborough, MA.
A 2006 graduate of Stonehill College, Grenache was a four-year starter at first base for coach Danielle Delude. As a captain in both her junior and senior years, she led the Skyhawks to a 21-18-1 record in 2006, making them one of the most improved DII squads in the nation. Grenache was also chosen to represent the United States at the International Friendship Series held at the Olympic complex in Sydney, Australia during the summer of 2006 and competed in the Goodwill Games in Lima, Peru in 2007.
Grenache holds a B.A. degree from Stonehill College where she majored in Psychology with a minor in Education Studies. Currently, she holds a dual position at Newbury between the Registrar’s Office and the Department of Athletics where she serves as the Assistant Director of Sports Information and advisor to the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. A native of Leominster, MA, Grenache currently resides in Acton, MA.
