BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Newbury College Department of Athletics announced today that Caitlin Benyi has resigned as the Newbury College Softball Coach in order to jumpstart a new career at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
Benyi, who accomplished numerous program records and individual awards in her only season of coaching, steps down following a 23-17 program-best record, including 16-2 in the New England Collegiate Conference, also a program record for wins and winning percentage.
With a roster featuring 10 healthy players for much of the season, Benyi and the Nighthawks made it to the NECC Championship Game, with Benyi being named NECC Coach of the Year and the Newbury College Coach of the Year. The 2017 Nighthawks finished with five All-Conference Members and the NECC Rookie of the Year in Arianna Gooden.
"I'm so thankful for my time at Newbury College," said Benyi. "The team and the people made this a very difficult decision but I'm excited for the next step in my career. I truly believe I left the program in a better place than I found it and I'm looking forward to following the team in the future."
As it stands, seven current Nighthawks will return for the 2018 softball season, seeking their first NECC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.
"I would like to sincerely thank Coach Benyi for her leadership over the past year," said Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. "It will be a challenge to replace a coach of her caliber but that is the task for us over the next month. We wish Coach well and will continue to build on the successful season we enjoyed last year. We have a great group of student-athletes and recruits working hard to getting to the next level."
A search for Benyi's replacement will begin immediately.
