BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College softball team were ranked second amongst all NCAA Division III institutions in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Academic Team rankings, announced Tuesday afternoon. It is the second straight year the Nighthawks finished in the top 10 after finishing ninth last year.

Reaching the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship Tournament for the third straight year with a 20-14 overall record and 12-6 conference record, the Nighthawks were equally as impressive in the classroom with a 3.633 team GPA.

"I'm so proud of what this team has accomplished academically," says sixth year Head Coach Brook Capello. "The student-athletes have high academic standards for themselves and have set the tone for what it means to be a Newbury College softball player. They work hard not only on the field and in the gym but also in the classroom."

In addition, 10 Nighthawks were amongst the hundreds of Division III student-athletes from across the country to earn the 2015 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Award. Seniors Sheri Liggiero (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Alyssa Donovan (West Haven, Conn.), junior Alexa Mummery (Rochester, N.Y.) and sophomore Samantha Libby (New Gloucester, Maine) earned the honors for the first time. They joined teammates Julia Flamenco (Copiague, N.Y.), Olivia Kenyon (Canton, Mass.), Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine), Lindsey Clark (Venice, Fla.), Emily Humphries (Westborough, Mass.) and Elizabeth Kia (Kea'au, Hawaii), who earned the recognition for a second time.

It is the fifth consecutive year the Newbury softball team has been represented with scholar-athletes and the second time the team has been recognized as a Top 10 program. Additionally, they were the only NECC institution to earn All-Academic Team honors as well as one of two conference schools to earn individual scholar-athlete accolades.

The NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a grade-point average north of 3.50 during the 2014-15 academic year. The prestigious honors marks the second component of the Association's academic award program as the teams with the highest GPAs in each membership category were recognized as the 2015 NFCA Top 10 All-Academic Teams.
