The Newbury College softball team picked up their third and fourth wins in a row this afternoon, defeating Wheelock College 4-3, 10-1, in Chestnut Hill, MA. Jessy Touron (Brockton, MA) led the way for the Nighthawks, as she went 4-6 on the day with 4 runs batted in, while teammate Rebecca Roach (Charlton, MA) picked up 15 strikeouts and became the all time leader for strikeouts in a season at Newbury.
Newbury 4, Wheelock 3
Game one of the double header would prove to be a pitchers dual, as the score remained tied at one a piece for seven innings. Newbury would score first in the bottom of the second inning when Touron singled to drive in Sam Rios (Bronx, NY), while Wheelock would pull even just a half an inning later when Sara Buscemi (Arlington, MA) walked and would later score when Nicole Zina (Bristol, RI) reached on an error.
The score would stay at one apiece until the top of the eighth when Wheelock would drive in two runs, Sarah Negron (Northbridge, MA) singled with no outs to drive in Christine Pellerin (Auburn, MA) (who was placed on second as part of the international tie breaking rule)and Buscemi. The Nighthawks responded to the pressure and drove in two runs of their own to tie the game again, this time at 3. Brittany Stracher (Dudley, MA) scored on an error, while teammate Teressa Farioli (E. Longmeadow, MA) drove in Joanna Robie (Andover, MA).
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Jen Anderson (Palmer, MA) was placed on second and advance to third on a fielder’s choice. With no outs, the Nighthawks’ shortstop Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, CT) came to the plate and blooped a single in front of the left fielder to score Anderson for the walk off victory.
Newbury 10, Wheelock 1
Game two of the double header would be a much different story as the Nighthawk’s bats would come alive and Newbury would go on to defeat the Wildcats 10-1. Despite the loss, Wheelock would score first in the top of the first inning when Zina singled and drove in Buscemi, but the Nighthawks answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Robie was out at first on a fielders choice to the shortstop, driving in Hylinski.
Newbury would go on to score five runs in the third inning and four runs in the fourth to cap off the game in five. The offensive push was led by Touron as she went 2-3 at the plate in game two, including a triple and three runs batted in, while teammate Farioli went 3-3, driving in 2, Rios and Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, CT) each had two hits in the rally as well.
Newbury improves to 6-7 in the conference and keeps their playoff hopes alive while Wheelock falls to 2-10 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the diamond tomorrow when they travel to Southern Vermont College to wrap up conference play, game times are set for 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
