Robie Helps Nighthawks Over .500 in NECC Action
The bats were out in full force Saturday afternoon for the Newbury College softball team taking two from Southern Vermont College, 10-1 and 13-4. Game two starter Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass./Andover) went six-for-eight with seven RBIs and helped her own cause with a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh.
While game one starter Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) dazzled and overwhelmed the Mountaineers line-up on the rubber, the Nighthawk offense came through at the dish. Newbury quickly jumped out in front early taking the early 1-0 lead after the first then putting up a crooked four and five runs in the second and third inning, to take the 10-0 advantage.
Southern Vermont grabbed a run in the bottom of the third but it did not matter, Roach was pitching as if it was still a one-run ballgame. The western Massachusetts native allowed just one run while scattering fours and fanning six Mountaineers to earn her sixth win of the season.
Game two of the twin billing was a different story. The Mountaineers were three outs away from the afternoon split when the Nighthawks put up a 10 spot in the top of the seven to walk away with the 13-4 victory. Centerfielder Brittany Stracher (Dudley, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) opened the inning lining a triple to left field. Robie helped her own cause driving in Stracher with a base hit to left to knot up the score at four. But the damage was not over.
Roach and left fielder Samantha Rios (Bronx, N.Y./School of the Future) lined back-to-back homeruns as teh onslaught was on. The Nighthawks batted around in the frame and the next time the Robie stepped to the dish she cleared the bases with a three run homerun into left for the third round tripper of the game.
Two innings prior in the top of the fifth, the Nighthawks took advantage of a Mountaineer miscue. Stracher launched the first homerun of the game to cut the Southern Vermont lead in half with her second of the season – third in her career – to drive in shortstop Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, Conn./Stratford).
Newbury jumps over .500 in conference action with the sweep over Southern Vermont improving to 8-7 (8-22 overall) while the Mountaineers remain winless, falling to 0-28 and 0-14 in the NECC.
