Late Season Run Earns Nighthawks Fifth Seed
The Newbury College softball teams enters the 2011 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship Tournament as the fifth seed with a 9-7 conference record. The Nighthawks are currently riding a seven game winning streak as they will face #4 Becker College tomorrow, Tuesday May 3rd, in Leicester, Mass. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Freshman pitcher and first baseman Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass./Andover) leads Newbury with a .452 batting average, eight doubles, two triples and a homerun while driving in 25 Nighthawk baserunners. Fellow pitcher, sophomore Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass./Shepherd Hill Regional) is right behind her batting .310 with two homeruns and 10 RBIs in addition to being a power pitcher on the rubber. Roach leads the NECC in strikeouts with 137 and became the second Newbury pitcher in as many season with 100-plus strikeouts in a season. (Katie O'Hara struck out 105 opposing batters last year.)
Shortstop Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) drove in 10 runs from lead-off spot while hitting .286 on the season with five stolen bases. Catcher and third baseman Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) had another solid offensive season, hitting .291 in 2011 with seven doubles, a triple and one homerun.
If Newbury wins tomorrow afternoon in Leicester, Mass. they will move on to face the top-seeded Lesley University Lynx (26-6/16-0 NECC) on Friday May 6th at UMass-Boston at 10:00 a.m.
