Nighthawks Drop two to Mariners
The Newbury College softball team fell to non-conference opponent Maine Maritime, 0-11, 0-7, in a double header this afternoon in Weston, MA. First baseman Sabrina Keach (Chesterville, ME) led the way for the Mainers as she went 4 of 5 on the day with a homerun.
Game 1: Maine Maritime 11, Newbury 0
In game one of the afternoon, the Mainers started the offense early, putting up eight of their 11 runs in the first three innings. After one run in the first, Maritime got the bats going and scored six runs in the second inning and one run in the third off of Keach's homerun. Leading the way for the Mainers in the second inning was senior Brittany Hunt (Hickory, NC) who drove in two runs on a single to centerfield, fellow senior Megan Russell (Peru, ME) also added an RBI double to leftfield and scored on a double by shortstop Andi Flannery (East Machias, ME). Maine would go ahead and add three more runs in the final inning as Keach would start off the inning with a single and later score on a 2 RBI single to centerfield from teammate Flannery.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks would see first year Joanna Robie (Andover, MA) hit her second double of the season, while Ariel Ross picked up her 10th hit on the year.
Game 2: Maine Maritime 7, Newbury 0
Game two of the afternoon appeared to be a much different story as the Mainers would only hold a one run lead heading into the fifth inning behind a strong pitching performance from the Nighthawks Robie. Robie would go on to pitch the complete game with 3 strikeouts and scattering nine hits. In the fifth and sixth innings the Mainers would take advantage of errors by the Nighthawks defense and put up 6 runs to complete the sweep.
Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) led the way for the Mainers as she went 3 of 4 from the plate and drove in three runs in the game. Keach would also add two singles in the victory. In the loss the Nighthawks Samantha Rios (Bronx, NY) picked up her seventh hit of the year, while Theresa Hylinski (Stratford, CT), Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow, MA) and Rebecca Roach (Charlton, MA) each added a hit in the game.
Newbury falls to 0-13 with the losses while the Mainers improve to 6-1 this season. The Nighthawks return to the diamond on Wednesday March 29th when they head to Nashua, NH for a double header against Rivier College. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
