Newbury Sweeps Daniel Webster, 10-9 & 11-4
Nashua – The Daniel Webster softball team dropped both ends of a NECC doubleheader Thursday, as Newbury College posted a 10-9 victory in a rain-delayed opener and picked up an 11-4 win in the nightcap of a five-inning game shortened due to darkness.
Newbury (4-22, 4-7 NECC) banged out 12 hits in the opener, which saw a nearly one-hour delay due to a passing thunderstorm, and came back from an 8-7 deficit after four innings, scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth and held off the Eagles late to take the 10-9 win.
Brittany Stracher (Dudley, Mass.) belted a two-run homer in the fourth for the Nighthawks, while Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass.) was 3 for 4 and knocked in two including a RBI triple in the sixth. Teressa Farioli (E. Longmeadow, Mass.) added a two-run triple in the first.
Courtney Brennan (Beverly, Mass.) had two hits with a double and knocked in two for the Eagles (6-14, 4-8 NECC) in the opener, while TC DiSantis (Hinsdale, Mass.) had two hits with a RBI double in the third and Lauren Chesnulevich (Hudson, N.H.) hit twice with a RBI triple in the fourth. Amanda Varricchio (Middletown, Conn.) picked up a pair of hits.
Newbury built a 4-0 lead plating three in the first and one in third before DWC rallied with four in the third. After Newbury took a 7-4 lead in the top of the fourth, the Eagles jumped back ahead with four more in the bottom of the frame.
Rebecca Roach (Charlton, Mass.) earned the win (3-11) on the mound, striking out 11 and walking six. Amanda Wilson (Merrimack, N.H.) took the loss (4-6).
In the nightcap, Newbury took advantage of five Eagle errors leading to seven unearned runs while DWC managed just five hits in the five-inning game. The Nighthawks scored two in the first, three in the second and three in the third to take command.
Roach and Ariel Ross (Bronx, N.Y.) each notched two-run doubles for Newbury, while Robie, Stratcher, Jesymarian Touron (Brockton, Mass.) and Audrey Spataro (Holland, Mass.) had two hits each.
