Newbury Baseball & Softball Support Miles for Myles
On Sunday, November 8, 2009 the Newbury College baseball and softball programs teamed up to take part in an NCAA sponsored event, Miles for Myles. Myles Brand the President of the NCAA passed away in a September after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. In his honor, the NCAA and the National Association for Basketball Coaches (NABA) encouraged all NCAA institutions nationwide to take part in a three-mile walk during weekend of November 7th to raise money for cancer research in honor of the passing of Brand. The three-miles were used to represent the three NCAA divisions.
Each athlete and participant was asked to give one dollar for each mile walked. The three-mile course took the student-athletes through the surrounding neighborhoods of the Newbury College campus and into Cleveland Circle, where members of both programs walked together for one cause. The three-mile course took the Nighthawks just under one-hour to complete and at the conclusion of the walk, the effort raised $138.00. That money will be sent to the American Cancer Association Coaches vs. Cancer program in Myles Brand's honor.
Head baseball coach Greg Sullivan is proud of the efforts of all the athletes and participants; "Mr. Brand did so many great things for the NCAA and it's great to see so many student-athletes recognized that and came together for such a great cause."
The Newbury baseball and softball programs would like to thank Faculty-Athletic Representative, Debbie Mael and her family for showing their support of the event and logging the miles alongside us. "It's really great to see the amount of support our student-athletes get from the Newbury College community. Its people like Debbie Mael that make Newbury College such a special place," reflects head softball coach Christine Grenache.
Both the baseball and softball programs open their seasons on March 8th in Orlando, Florida.
