Nighthawks Battle to Win Doubleheader
Weston, Mass.—Newbury College (4-6) defeated nearby Regis
College (1-14, 0-2 TCCC) 6-4 in game one, and 8-6 in the second
game of doubleheader action Saturday. Freshman Theresa Hylinski
(Stratford, Conn.) batted in two runs for the Nighthawks. She went
3-of-5 at the plate.
She also had two stolen bases on Regis pitcher Maryssa Allen
(Attleboro, Mass.). Allen pitched eight innings, giving up 14 hits,
six runs, and allowed three doubles.
Regis held a two run lead (4-2) in the second inning. The
Nighthawks would blast back to score four runs in the third.
Hylinski started the rally off with a single, Brittany Stracher
(Dudley, Mass.) and Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, Calif.) would also
reach on singles, and Sarah Young (Waterloo, N.Y.) reached base on
balls.
The Pride, now fighting from behind, rallied to score two runs in
the fourth inning to tie the score at six-all. Caitlin Luquet
(Walnut Creek, Calif.) would hit a solo triple to centerfield to
give the Pride a glimmer of hope in the extra innings. Luquet
finished the day 2-of-4, and having one putout.
Regis teammates Kelly Cadigan and Molly Teixeira (Rindge, N.H.)
also went 2-of-4 for the Pride. Entering the ninth inning tied,
Newbury’s Stracher would ground out to the pitcher.
With a runner now on third, Young would single to bring in the 7-6
score. Ross would single to advance Young to third, and eventually
Sarah Thorton (Clifton Springs, N.Y.), who reached on an error by
Regis’ Hope Benjamin (Billerica, Mass.), allowed Young to
score the 8-6 run.
With one out on the board, and with a two run lead, Regis’
Teixeira would tag two batters out at home plate to end the
game.
Regis College will take the field for the third consecutive day
Sunday, March 28 to host conference opponent Western New England
College. Newbury will travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on
the same day. Both teams will play in doubleheaders starting at
noon.
