Nighthawks Drop Two to Beacons
The Newbury College softball team lost to the University of Massachusetts, 10-1 and 14-1 Thursday afternoon. Sophomore Christina Polsonetti (Revere, MA/Revere) paved the way for Beacons going 6-for-8 on the day with seven RBIs, a double and a two-run homerun.
Freshman Kara Willis (Burrillville, RI/Burrillville) went the distance for the Beacons in the first game, pitching a two-hitter allowing just one run while striking out three and walking three. Senior Courtney Haroules (Littleon, MA/Cushing Academy) pitched five strong innings in game two allowing just one run on six hits while striking out two. She also helped her own cause with a two-run homerun in the middle of a nine-run first inning rally and finished the game 2-for-for with three RBIs. Senior Lauren O'Connor (Everett, MA/Everett) also had a 6-for-8 day with a perfect 4-for-4 showing in game two including two doubles and three RBIs.
Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) was solid for the Nighthawks with a perfect 2-for-2 performance in the first game. The freshman led off the bottom of the third inning with a single and scored the Nighthawks lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of junior Kaila Nicolia (Monroe, CT/Masuk).
With the loss Newbury falls to 0-20 while the University of Massachusetts-Boston improves to 8-14 on the season.
