Nighthawks Split with Mountaineers
The Newbury College softball team split with the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers in a New England Collegiate Conference Doubleheader Friday afternoon losing the first game 9-1 in five innings and winning the second game 7-6.
In the first game the Mountaineers dominated with three runs in the first and never looked back. Sophomore Mariann Mangiapane (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) led Southern Vermont offensively going 3-for-3 scoring two runs. Freshman Alyssa Davis (Lyndonville, Vt.) added two doubles, an RBI, and scored two runs. Freshman Kayla Whitman (Bennington, Vt.) and sophomores Ailish Ryan (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), Cala Colvin (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), Tiarra Hall (Washington, D.C.), Amber Coutermash (Westport, Conn.), and Kiara Bates (Washington, D.C) all had hits for SVC who tallied 11 total on the day.
Tischer (3-13) won her third of the year striking out three and walking two while giving up no earned runs. Freshman Olga Cepeda (0-27) picked up the loss for the Nighthawks striking out three, walking two, and giving up eight runs.
In game two the Mountaineers offense was led by Davis who knocked three hits (3-for-4), Whitman who went 2-for-3 with a two run triple, and Mangiapane had two base hits. A few mistakes cost SVC the sweep handing the Nighthawks there first win of the season as they improved to 1-27 overall.
Junior Katelyn Mark led Newbury going 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Junior Kaila Nicolia went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI. Olga (1-27) picked up the win striking out three and walking three. Tischer (3-14) got the loss striking out a season high six batters and only walking two.
The Mountaineers head to Conference foe Wheelock College (5-18) Saturday, April 25, for a NECC Doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. while the Nighthawks host Becker College (2-22) at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
