Softball Drops Conference Opener
The Nighthawks continue their quest for win #1 after losing a pair to NECC opponent, Mitchell College, in a double-header today in Chestnut Hill, MA.
In game one, freshman pitcher Olga Cepeda (Boston, MA/Madison Park) threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out three and walking four. Errors proved costly for Newbury as they committed four on the game, allowing the Mariners to come away with the victory.
Game two saw an increased offensive effort as Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy), Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard), Kaila Nicolia (Monroe, CT/Masuk), and Leanne Merritt (Fairfield, CT/Bethel) all collected one hit a piece. Cepeda allowed seven hits to Mitchell but turned up her game at the plate going 2-3 in the nightcap. Despite the increase in hits, the Nighthawks were unable to string them together to generate a solid offensive attack. Conversely, the Mariners received timely hitting throughout the game, highlighted by a two-run homerun by catcher Sara Krolikowski (Bristol, CT/Brisol Eastern).
Newbury resumes conference play on Thursday, April 2, 2009 when they host Lesley University for a double-header beginning at 3:30 PM.
