Nighthawks Fall To Mariners
The Maine Maritime Academy picked up their first and second victories of the season with a 9-3 and 15-7 double-header sweep against the Newbury College softball team Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Kayla Higgins (Sullivan, ME) belted a solo homerun in the top of the second inning to kick start a four run, two-out rally in the inning. The Mariners followed with four consecutive base hits, culminating in a two RBI single off the bat of freshman Dana Houghton (Lee, ME), who was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Mallery Stanley (Standish, ME) picked up her first win of the season going the distance allowing just two earned runs on seven hits.
In the second game, junior Jessica Jordan (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) drove in classmate Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy), with one of her three singles as the Nighthawks batted around for a three run first to take a 3-1 lead. But the Mariners stormed back scoring at least one run in every inning. Stanley helped her own cause with a perfect 3-for-3 performance including a solo shot to leftfield to lead off a five run fourth.
Dana Houghton (Lee, ME) and Hannah Seamans (Athens, ME) each finished game two 3-for-4 with a double and two and three RBIs, respectively. Freshman Ashley Hunt (Waldoboro, ME) rounded out four Mariners with two-plus RBIs in the second game, with a perfect 2-for-2 performance. Along with her two RBIs, Standish pitched five innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits while striking out four and walking four.
With the loss, Newbury drops to 0-16 on the season while Maine Maritime improves to 2-7. The Nighthawks return to the field on Tuesday April 7 as they travel to Longmeadow, MA to face the 12-9 Bay Path College Wildcats. Their next home game will be Thursday April 9 against UMass - Boston at 3:30pm.
