Newbury Volleyball & Softball Honored for Academic Excellence
Members of the Newbury College men's volleyball and softball teams were honored for their superb academic performance by being named to the New England Collegiate Conference Academic All-Conference Team. A total of 40 student-athletes from the NECC received this honor for the winter/spring 2009 semester, including Nighthawks Joshua Aberly, Timothy MacMillan, Bryan McDermand, Matthew Sadowski, Mark Thomas, and Leanne Merritt.

Nighthawks Split in Dramatic Fashion
The Newbury College softball team split a double header with Becker College this afternoon in Chestnut Hill, dropping the first game 3-10 and winning the second with a walk off 6-5 win. Game two was tied going into the seventh, 5-5 when Nighthawks pitcher Olga Cepeda would take first after being hit by a pitch and pinch runner Jessica Graus would then advance to second on a wild pitch. Centerfielder Lindsay Shiboski knocked a shot up the middle to drive in Graus from second, ending the game in a walk off.

Nighthawks Split with Mountaineers
The Newbury College softball team split with the Southern Vermont College Mountaineers in a New England Collegiate Conference Doubleheader Friday afternoon losing the first game 9-1 in five innings and winning the second game 7-6. Junior Katelyn Mark led Newbury going 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Junior Kaila Nicolia went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Eagle Softball Soars Over Nighthawks
The Daniel Webster College softball team extended its winning streak to nine the programs longest in 11 years and continued to close in on the record for victories in a season with a 13-0, 18-8 sweep of Newbury College in NECC action Sunday at Eagle Field. Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA) and Leanne Merritt (Fairfield, CT) led the Nighthawks with two hits and two RBI, while Olga Cepeda (Boston, MA) added two hits and took both losses on the mound.

Wildcats Prey on Nighthawks
The Newbury College softball team lost to Wheelock College 5-1 in both games of Saturday afternoons doubleheader. The Nighthawks were led by junior Jessica Jordan (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) and Kaila Nicolia (Monroe, CT/Masuk) who went 2-5 and 2-6 on the day, respectively. Jordan drove in Newburys lone run in the first game with an RBI single in the first inning while Nicolia went 2-for-4 in the second game.

Elms College Sweeps Newbury in Doubleheader
Elms College swept its third conference doubleheader in six days to extend its win streak to six straight and remain in third place in the current conference standings. Newbury freshman catcher Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, CT) delivered a RBI groundout in the fourth to pull the Nighthawks to within 3-1; while teammate Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow,MA) ripped a shot down the right field line to break up the Blazers' no-hitter.

Nighthawks Drop Two to Beacons
The Newbury College softball team lost to the University of Massachusetts, 10-1 and 14-1 Thursday afternoon. Teressa Farioli (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow) was solid for the Nighthawks with a perfect 2-for-2 performance in the first game. The freshman led off the bottom of the third inning with a single and scored the Nighthawks lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of junior Kaila Nicolia (Monroe, CT/Masuk).

Nighthawks Fall To Mariners
The Maine Maritime Academy picked up their first and second victories of the season with a 9-3 and 15-7 double-header sweep against the Newbury College softball team Sunday afternoon. In the second game, junior Jessica Jordan (Stoneham, MA/Stoneham) drove in classmate Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy), with one of her three singles as the Nighthawks batted around for a three run first to take a 3-1 lead.

Nighthawks Fall to Lynx
The Newbury softball team dropped a tough NECC double-header to visiting Lesley University today by scores of 7-2 and 8-0. Despite the losses, the Nighthawks showed a fierce, competitive drive through both games making definite progress on their quest for win number one.

Softball Drops Conference Opener
The Nighthawks continue their quest for win #1 after losing a pair to NECC opponent, Mitchell College, in a double-header today in Chestnut Hill, MA. In game one, freshman pitcher Olga Cepeda (Boston, MA/Madison Park) threw a complete game two-hitter, striking out three and walking four. Game two saw an increased offensive effort as Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy), Ariel Ross (Gales Ferry, CT/Ledyard), Kaila Nicolia (Monroe, CT/Masuk), and Leanne Merritt (Fairfield, CT/Bethel) all collected one hit a piece.

Nine-Hit Attack Not Enough for Nighthawks
After dropping game one of a non-conference double-header vs. St. Joseph's College (CT), the Nighthawk softball team rallied to boast a nine-hit attack in game two. Newbury was led by junior captain Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North Quincy) who was 3-4 in the nightcap, but fell just short of victory in the game's final innnings.

Nighthawk Softball looks to improve upon their 2007 success by emphasizing the importance of team work ethic and improvement game by game, pitch by pitch. The addition of a Spring Training Trip to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL will further prepare the Nighthawks for an even more competitive schedule in 2008.
