Maliff, Thomas Sweep Individual Honors at Mt. Ida Invitational
The Newbury College cross country team continues to make great strides with every meet as the Nighthawks swept the individual title at the inaugural Mount Ida Cross Country 5K Invitational, Thursday September 15th. Junior Solange Thomas (Webster ,Mass.) crossed the finish line of the women’s race in 22:26 while senior Ryan Maliff (Ashfield, Mass.) paced the men with a time of 34:20.
Neither race was a battle to finish for the Nighthawks. Maliff had his Mt. Ida counterpart, junior Sean Slattery by a good 18 seconds while Thomas was 16 seconds out in front of Mt. Ida senior Jeileen Rivera to become Newbury’s first cross country tandem to sweep the medalist position.
Sophomore Jessica Harralson (Lebanon, Conn.) continued to improve placing 11th with time of 26 minutes as classmate Jennifer Lewis (Stratford, Conn.) was hot on her heels finishing 1:18 later for 12th place. Freshman Shanice Reed (Meridan, Conn.) followed soon after at 28:18.
Other Newbury runners: Senior Kayla Grady (Barrington, R.I.) finished the 5K in 34:11 while on the men’s side, senior and first year runner Benjamin Weiner (Barrington, R.I.) crossed the line with a time of 40:04.
The competition gets tougher next week, traveling to Chicopee State Park for conference rival Elms College’s Invitational at 10:00am.
