Cross Country Looks to Sprint in 2011

Under first year Head Coach, Brian Ford, the men’s and women’s cross country teams have their eyes set on a solid 2011 season after setting the foundation down in 2010.

In 2010, the men started to build towards success earning New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) the Sportsmanship Award. Returning upperclassmen, Ryan Maliff and Irving Buelto look to lead a young group of runners in seven meets in 2011. Last season, Maliff ran a personal best, 25:04 in the University of Maine-Farmington and looks to continue that success in his senior season. Cumberland, R.I. native, John Morgan returns for his sophomore season looking to top an impressive first year in which he was selected to the All-Conference First Team.

On the women’s side, junior Solange Thomas returns for her third season wearing the Green and Gold after a highly decorated sophomore campaign. Not only did Thomas earn All-NECC  Second Team honors but she was the medalist at last year’s Eagle Invitation hosted by Daniel Webster College in Nashua, N.H. with a time of 22:10. She will be joined by senior Kayla Grady, who has improved each year over the course of her career at Newbury, as the women look to kick-off an eight meet season this fall with the Mayfloward Kick-Off Invitational hosted by New England College.
