BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Newbury College men's volleyball team completed the season sweep of Lesley University with a 3-0 shut-out, Thursday evening, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action. First year outside hitter Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) led the way to victory notching a team-high 10 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for an outstanding .529 attack percentage.
Newbury came out of the gate strong, hitting .462 as a team with 16 kills on 26 attempts. First year outside hitter Xavier Brown-Rose (Wilbraham, Mass.) was nearly perfect from the floor notching three kills on five attempts while classmate, middle hitter Wade Robidoux (Agawam, Mass.) posted three kills on four attempts and just one miscue as the Nighthawks took game one 25-14.
They did not back down in the second set as Thorne was flawless from the floor, tallying five kills on eight attempts for a staggering .625 attack percentage. Senior outside hitter Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H.) followed suit with four kills on nine attempts while registering one block assist en route to the 25-16 win to take the two-game advantage.
Up two games to zero, the Nighthawks kept their foot on the accelerator in the third set. First year setter Michael Holihan (Northampton, Pa.) was perfect form the floor notching three kills on three attempts to go along with two block assists to seal the match with a 25-12 third set victory.
After hitting .800 against the Lynx in their first meeting, Robidoux followed up with eight kills on 11 attempts and just one error for an outstanding .636 attacker percentage. Fellow middle hitter, sophomore Nile Fox (Hampton, Va.) was perfect from the floor also recording eight kills on eight attempts.
Lesley's left-handed sophomore outside hitter Tyler Burns (Newtown, Pa.) led the Lynx hitting .407 with a match-high 15 kills on 27 attempts and just four miscues.
Newbury improves to 4-6 and 3-1 in conference action while Lesley falls to 0-9 and 0-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court Saturday morning when they host Elms College at 11:00 A.M. The Lynx will be back in action tomorrow, Friday February 20th when they host Endicott College at 8:00 p.m.
Newbury's .507 attack percentage was their highest hitting percentage as a team this year…Their previous best was hitting .424 against Lesley earlier this week…The Nighthawks are now 16-0 against the Lynx…
