Powell, Sayne Lead Nighthawks Past Pride

The Newbury College men's volleyball team defeated the Pride of Regis College, 3-0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-13), Wednesday evening in Brookline, MA. First Year outside hitters, Jake Powell (Salinas, Calif.) and Tyler Sayne (Tucson, Ariz.) powered the Nighthawks to victory with 13 and 14 kills respectfully. 

Newbury controlled the first set from start to finish and Powell was near perfect, knocking down four kills on five attempts, for a hitting percentage of .800. Sayne also dominated, as he produced six kills on nine attempts, hitting .444.  The Nighthawks jumped out to and early lead and never looked back, taking a 1-0 lead, defeating Regis 25-9. 

In second set, the Pride's Joe Coye (Plaistow, N.H.) sparked Regis, hitting .625 with five kills on eight attempts but the Nighthawks proved to be to much and finished the set 25-18 to take a 2-0 lead.  Newbury's Cody Braden (Fair Grove, Mo.) dished out a set high 9 assists, while Sayne finished four of those assists with kills. 

The Nighthawks finished the 3-0 sweep in the third set, defeating Regis 25-13 behind Powell's six kills on 10 attempts.   Braden dished out a match high 13 assists in the set while teammate Sayne completed his strong night with four kills on seven attempts. 

Despite the loss, Regis outside hitter Coye finished with a team high six kills, while teammate Angel Aquilar (Silver Springs, Md.) dished out a team high 13 assists. 

Newbury improves to 8-12 overall, 5-6 NECC , while Regis falls to 2-12 overall, 2-8 NECC.  The Nighthawks return to the hard court on Saturday when they host NECC front runner Endicott College, game time is set for 12:00pm.  Saturday will mark the final home game for Nighthawk Seniors Alex Amylon, Jeremy Bergeron and Jarryl McKey.  The three seniors will be honored before the game for their dedication to Newbury College athletics over the course of their careers.
