Biuso's 1,000th Dig Helps Lead Nighthawks to Sweep
BENNINGTON, Vt. – The Newbury College men's volleyball team defeated New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) foe, 3-0, and Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1, to sweep Saturday afternoon's tri-match. Senior libero Michael Biuso (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) registered his 1,000th dig of his career tallying a match-high 18 in the victory.
The Nighthawks improve to 9-5 on the season and 4-1 in NECC action while Southern Vermont falls to 2-8, 1-2 in the conference, and Wentworth drops to 11-6.
In their victory over the Leopards, Newbury hit an astounding .320% from the floor. Senior Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) led three in double figures notching a match-high 15 kills. Fellow senior outside hitter James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md./Havre De Grace) had a solid day, tallying 12 kills while recording three aces in the win. Freshman outside hitter Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H./Salem) rounded out the trio with 10 kills.
Wentworth's Lowell Jesmer had 14 kills in the loss. Tyler Moriarty added 24 assists for the Leopards.
Nighthawks continued its hot hitting, 293% from the floor, in the third match of the afternoon against the Mountaineers. The Nighthawks attack was spread throughout the lineup with Daley leading all with nine kills. Senior setter Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, Cal./Viewpoint) added 26 assists in the match, finishing with 67 on the day.
Leading the way for the Mountaineers was Anthony Barahona with eight kills. Anthony Ayala added 16 assists in the defeat.
Newbury returns to action on Thursday February 17th when they host the MIT Engineers at 7:00pm. The Nighthawks will be looking for retribution as the Engineers swept Newbury, 3-0 on January 18th.
