Newbury Falls to NECVA New England Leading MIT
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team fell to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-0, Thursday evening. Sophomore outside hitter Matt Hohenberger (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) paved the way to victory for the Engineers registering a match-high 13 kills.
It was a barn-burner from the beginning of the first set. With the Engineers up early in the game, freshman outside hitter Danny Tiner (Salem, N.H./Salem) recorded a big kill to keep the game close but MIT freshman Ken Siebert (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) responded with a huge kill of his own to expand the Engineer lead.
Trailing by three late in the game, sophomore Alex Amylon (Scituate, R.I./Scituate) cut the deficit to two with a huge kill, to ignite the Nighthawks but it was too late. MIT remained poised, taking set one, 25-22, behind Hohenberger’s set-high seven kills.
The Engineers took the second set, 25-19 behind junior David Thomas (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon)’s five kills and went on to complete the sweep the match with the 25-16 victory in the third set. Siebert followed up Hohenberger tallying 10 kills while senior setter Tim Lee (Natick, Mass./Natick) recorded a match-high 39 assists and junior Garrett Winther (Broomfield, Colo./Holy Family) played solid defense registering three blocks.
Despite the loss, senior Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) and freshman Dan Davison (Howell, N.J./Howell) led Newbury with seven kills while senior James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md./Havre De Grace) recorded four block assists.
With the loss, the Nighthawks fall 10-6 on the season while the Engineers improve to 14-3. Newbury returns to action this Saturday February 19th when they travel to Weston, Mass. for a tri-match against Mt. Ida College and Regis College at 11:00am.
