Nighthawks Sweep Tri-Match

The Newbury College men’s volleyball team swept Saturday afternoon’s New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tri-match defeating both Lesley University and Southern Vermont College by scores of 3-0, 3-0 in Brookline, MA.

Newbury 3, Lesley 0

The Nighthawks received astonishing performances by senior Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston) and freshman Chris Espinola (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) who both recorded a game high 8 kills. Freshman Tim Anderson (Plaistow, N.H./Timberland Regional) contributed 6 kills while fellow senior teammate Matt Talamantes reached a career milestone dishing out his 5000th assist after collecting 22 in the match. Senior Mike Biuso (South Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) added a game high 11 digs which helped lead the Nighthawks to a 3-0 victory over the Lynx.

For the Lynx, freshman Max Hoevenaar (Orlando, FL/Pine Castle Christian Academy) and William Lau (Charlestown, MA/Boston Latin Academy) both added 6 kills respectively. Junior Christian Domingo (Los Angeles, CA/College of the Canyons) tallied a team high 7 kills. Lau and senior teammate Zach-Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) both recorded a team high 6 digs. The lynx were led by senior Stephen Siragusa (Valley Stream, NY/Valley Stream) who recorded a team high 21 assists.

Southern Vermont 3, Lesley 1

The Southern Vermont Mountaineers received an outstanding performance from freshman Anthony Barahona (Eagle Rock, Ca./Cal State Northbridge) who recorded a game high 23 kills and 10 digs. Juniors Sean Moore II (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. HS) and Connor Murray (Litchfield, Conn./Litchfiled HS) contributed 11 and 8 kills respectively. Senior Aaron Eschler (Gloversville, N.Y./Broadalbin-Perth HS) recorded a team high 16 digs, while Junior Nick Haggerty (Wynantskill, N.Y./Averill Park HS) added 11. Anthony Ayala recorded a game high in assists with a staggering 40.

Zach Almeida-Beers led the Lynx with 11 kills and 5 serving aces, while Christian Domingo had a team high 13 kills. William Lau tallied 16 digs while teammate Tyler Reeves had a game high 19 digs.

Newbury 3, Sothern Vermont 0

Chris Espinola tallied a team high of 6 kills for the Nighthawks and Michael Biuso recorded a game high with 6 digs. Freshman Patrick Robidoux (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) contributed 12 assists for the Nighthawk’s victory; while teammate Matt Talamantes recorded a game high 14 assist. 

Mountaineer Anthony Barahona added a game high 7 kills while teammate Anthony Ayala also recorded a game high with 14 assists.

With the second victory over the Southern Vermont Mountaineers, the Newbury Nighthawks class of 2011 recorded their 100th team win.

With the victories the Nighthawks clinched the NECC regular season title and will host the championships Friday and Saturday of next weekend.
