Newbury Falls to Endicott
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team fell to visiting Endicott College, 3-1, Tuesday evening in a battle for the #2 spot in NECVA New England. The Gulls defeated the Nighthawks with a well balanced offensive attack led by outside hitter Zeke Kubish (Bethlehem, NY/Bethlehem) who finished with a team high 14 kills.
In the first set, Newbury looked solid as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead but Endicott would shake off their bus legs and pull the set even at 11. The next 14 points would go back and forth with two lead changes and four ties, the last at 17 a piece. Endicott then broke ahead for good on a kill from Travis Netherton (Waukegan, Ill, Waukegan) and the Gulls went on to take the first set 25-21.
The second set was dominated by the Gulls as they raced out to a 9-2 lead and never trailed the entire set. Kubish had 6 of his 14 kills in the set, while Newbury’s James Beck (Havre De Grace, MD/Havre De Grace) matched him with six of his own in the dropped set.
The third set provided the most drama of the night with 19 ties and 6 lead changes, most of which came in the final 8 points for each team. In the end, Newbury pulled out the 27-25 win to force a forth set. The Nighthawks were paced by Beck once again with 5 of his game high 18 kills, while teammate Max Daley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) had 5 of his 13 kills in the set.
In the final set of the match, Endicott finished out strong with a 25-10 score to seal the victory and take 2nd place in NECVA New England. With the loss, Newbury falls to 3rd with two NECVA games remaining.
Newbury returns to action this Thursday when they travel to Emmanuel College, where they will look to make a case for an at large bid in the NECVA tournament, game time is set for 7:00pm.
