Kim Helps Nighthawks Soar Over Lions
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team swept Emerson College, 3-0, Thursday evening. Junior outside hitter Danny Kim (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) paved the way to victory registering a game-high eight kills.
The Nighthawks jumped out to the early lead in the first game but the Lions would battle back. Newbury seniors James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md./Havre De Grace) and Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) each tallied three kills to take game one, 25-21.
Kim came alive in the second set, tallying a game-high six kills, as the Nighthawks kept the pressure on the Lions to take the second set, 25-16. Emerson answered in the third game as they made a valiant comeback late in the contest but freshman Dan Davison (Howell, N.J./Howell) sealed the match with his fourth kill of the night from Talamantes.
Despite the loss, Swarttz and junior Frank O’Sullivan (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada/E.S.P De La Salle) each recorded six kills for the Lions while O’Sullivan added a match-high three block assists in the loss. Junior Steve Selnick (Chesire, Conn./Chesire) tallied a team-high 14 assists.
With the win, Newbury improves to 7-5 on the season while Emerson falls to 4-5. The Nighthawks return to action this weekend when they travel to Bennington, Vt. for a tri-match against conference foe Southern Vermont College and NECVA opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology.
