Nighthawks Hold Off Blazers, 3-2
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team held off Elms College, 3-2, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action, Thursday evening. Senior outside hitter James Beck (Havre De Grace, Md./Havre De Grace) paved the way to victory, registering a double-double, tallying a team-high 17 kills and 13 digs.
The Nighthawks jumped out to the early lead, taking the first set 25-16 but the Blazers answered winning games two and three. Elms junior outside hitter Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) combined to notch 14, of his match-high 18 kills, in the second and third set as the Blazers won games two and three, 25-22 and 25-20, respectively.
In game four, Newbury tied up the contest with a 25-13 win. Senior setter Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint) led four players with three kills while tallying a set-high 10 digs. The Nighthawks did not look back and closed out the match with the 15-12 win in the fifth set.
Senior middle blocker Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) finished the game with 16 kills and four block assists while freshman middle blocker Chris Espinola (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) was solid in the win with nine kills in their 19th victory of the season.
Elms freshman middle hitter Bryson Rainey (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) followed up Acosta registering 12 kills and recording a match-high seven total blocks (two solo and five assisted) in the loss. Classmate freshman setter Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Adianez) added 35 assists.
With the win, Newbury improves to 19-9 on the season and 6-0 in the conference while Elms falls to 10-15 and 6-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to the court on Saturday March 19th when they host a tri-match against NECC foes Lesley University and Southern Vermont College at 11:00am.
