Daley Helps Nighthawks Top Eagles
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team defeated Daniel Webster College, 3-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECCC)action, Tuesday evening. Senior middle blocker Max Daley (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) paved the way to victory registering a match-high 10 kills.
Newbury came out of the gate firing, taking a quick 1-0 game advantage with a 25-8 victory in the first set. Freshman middle blocker Chris Espinola (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) registered a set-high four kills and two total blocks while senior setter Matt Talamantes (Los Angeles, Calif./Viewpoint) recorded nine assists.
The Eagles responded in the second game jumping out 4-0 early. Daniel Webster held the lead for the majority of the set behind freshman outside hitter Joe Walz’s (East Longmeadow, Mass./East Longmeadow) six kills. But the Nighthawks refused to quit.
Facing game-point and down by five, Newbury mounted a comeback. Spurred by three consecutive kills from Daley, the Nighthawks came back and knotted up the contest at 24. Junior outside hitter Danny Kim (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview JFK) sealed the second set with a euphoric kill to go up 2-0 on the match.
Junior outside hitter Chris Chin’s (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) registered four of his six kills on the night in the third set as Newbury held off Daniel Webster, 25-13 in game three. Espinola chipped in with two total blocks giving him a match-high of four on the evening.
Walz led the Eagles with 10 kills in the loss while teammate junior outside hitter Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, N.Y./North Sachem) followed up with five kills and two block assists.
With the win, Newbury improves to 15-9 and 4-0 in the conference while Daniel Webster falls to 6-8 and 4-2 in the NECC. The Nighthawks return to action tomorrow evening, March 2nd, when they face the Eagles again in Nashua, N.H. at 7:30pm.
