Nighthawks Soar, Sweep Tri-Match

Newbury College defeats Wentworth, 3-0 (30-24, 30-28, 30-28)

The Newbury College men’s volleyball team swept Wentworth Institute of Technology and Southern Vermont College, 6-0, in Saturday afternoon’s tri-match at Hellenic College. Senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA) sealed the first match against Wentworth with a match high 15 kills to give the Nighthawks the 3-0 victory.

Newbury was led by Thomas and outside hitter Danny Kim (Plainview, NY) as they combined for 28 kills, while setter Matt Talamantes served up 43 assists in the match.  In games two and three, Wentworth put up a solid effort falling to the Nighthawks by just two points in each game but were unable to break into the win column.  Wentworth was led by Derek Portugal (Barrington, RI) and Tom Ceurvels (Weymouth, MA), as they each had 13 kills in the match respectively. 

 

Wentworth defeats Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-13, 30-22, 30-13)

In match two of the day, Wentworth was yet again led by Ceurvels as he picked up another 11 kills in the match to end the day with 23, while Wentworth setter Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, MA) turned in a match high 35 assists to finish the day with 61. 

Despite the loss, Southern Vermont’s Matt Schwab (Lambertville, NJ) and Cam Herrington (Cambridge, NY) picked up five kills apiece in the match.     

 

Newbury College defeats Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-10, 30-12, 30-21)

In the final match of the day, Newbury defeated Southern Vermont 3-0 to clinch first place in the NECC and lock up home court advantage in the NECC Tournament next weekend.  

The Nighthawks were powered by an all around team effort that saw six players with four kills or more in the match.  Leading the way for Newbury was Kim with eight kills and 11 digs. 

Despite the loss Herrington turned in another seven kills for the Mountaineers giving him 12 on the day. 

With the two wins the Nighthawks improve to 19-9 (8-0 NECC) on the season, while Wentworth and Southern Vermont fall to 13-8 and 1-15, respectively. Newbury will return to action on Tuesday when they face the Gulls of Endicott College at 7pm.
