The Mount Ida College men's volleyball team dropped their third consecutive North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) loss in the opening match of Saturday's NECVA tri-match against visiting Newbury College falling 3-0 by scores on 30-20, 30-13, and 30-18. The Mustangs fall to 4-8 overall and remain at 2-5 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). The Nighthawks improve to 14-3.
The Mustangs came out with a lot of confidence in game one taking a commanding 8-3 lead over the Nighthawks after a freshman Ross Florexil (Lake Worth, FL/Lake Worth) kill. Mount Ida held a small advantage for the next couple of points while the visitors chipped away slowly and eventually tied the score at 14-14 after a Nighthawks kill by junior James Beck (Havre De Grace, MD/Havre De Grace). The score continued to knot for the next few sets until Newbury pulled away by three points up 20-17 after a net violation by Mount Ida. From there, Newbury reeled off a10-3 run to capture the 30-20 game one win up 1-0 in the match.
Game two was a whole different story with the Nighthawks jumping out to a huge 7-1 advantage after a hitting error. Newbury continued to pound the offense going ahead 20-9 after a 13-8 run. The Mustangs were behind by too many points to mount a comeback only mustering four more points in the set. Newbury ultimately cruised to an easy 30-13 game two victory leading 2-0 in the match.
The Mustangs led for the opening of game three up 5-4 after a Newbury error. The Nighthawks turned up the heat and went ahead 10-7 after a service ace by Nighthawk senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional). It was all but over from there while the visitors went on a tear score in bunches with no answer from Mount Ida. The Nighthawks eventually cruised to a 30-18 game three win capturing the 3-0 match win.
