Thomas Helps Nighthawks Earn 20th Win
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team defeated Emmanuel College, 3-1 (30-21, 30-27, 30-32, 34-32) Thursday evening. Senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) paved the way with a team-high 14 kills.
Newbury picked up two quick wins in the first and second games, 30-21 and 30-27, respectively, of the match before Emmanuel mounted a comeback in the third game. Junior Keoni Rabaino (Tucson, AZ/Catalina Foothills) recorded eight of his match-high 17 kills in game three to help the Saints avoid the sweep.
Emmanuel battled tough in the fourth game of the night behind junior Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, CA/San Luis Obispo) who tallied six kills and recorded three service aces in the game but it was not enough. Thomas and senior Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) righted the ship for Newbury, tallying four and three kills, respectively. In addition Aberly also contributed with two of his three solo blocks in the contest and his only service ace of the match.
The Nighthawks earn their 20th win of the season with the victory while the Saints fall to 22-8. Newbury will return to action when they host the New England Collegiate Conference Championship on Saturday March 27th at 11:00 AM
