Kim Helps Nighthawks Sweep Blazers
The Newbury College men’s volleyball team swept Elms College Thursday evening, 3-0. Senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) led the way to the Nighthawks 17th victory of the season with a game-high 19 kills.
After falling to the Blazers early in the first game, 7-1, Newbury stormed back to take game one 30-23 behind Thomas’s 11 kills in the game. Sophomore Dan Kim (Plainview, NY/Plainview JFK) was one of the most consistent players on the night, tallying three kills in each game, helping the Nighthawks to two 30-21 wins in games two and three. The New York native finished the game with nine kills, second to Thomas, while picking up a game-high three assisted blocks.
Sophomore Mike Kleckner (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) led Elms with a team-high nine kills in the loss while classmate Yonalvy Acosta (Holyoke, MA/Holyoke) followed up with eight and two assisted blocks. Teammate sophomore Mike Martin (Enfield, CT/Enrico Fermi) also played solid recording three service aces.
The Nighthawks remain undefeated at 7-0 in the conference and improve to 17-9 overall while the Blazers fall to 3-5 in the conference and 4-19 overall. Newbury returns to action on Saturday March 20th when they host Wentworth Institute of Technology and Southern Vermont College in a tri-match at 11:00 AM. The Nighthawks swept both the Leopards and the Mountaineers the last time they faced the two teams on February 4th and 13th, respectively.
