Nighthawks Surpass Eagles
The Newbury College men's volleyball team defeated Daniel Webster College, 3-1, Thursday evening. Senior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) paved the way to victory with a game-high 14 kills and five solo blocks.
After falling 30-14 in the first game of the night, the Eagles jumped out in front early in the second game but the Nighthawks responded to take the game two, 30-24. Down two games to zero, Daniel Webster mounted a comeback with a 30-26 win behind sophomore Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, NY/North Sachem) in the third game, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Newbury answered in game four by taking the quick 17-6 advantage, taking the game, 30-13.
Senior Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) followed up Thomas's 14 kills with 12 of his own while junior James Beck (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) was solid for the Nighthawks in the win. Beck finished the game recording nine kills, three assisted blocks and two services aces.
Despite the loss, Shannon led the Eagles with a team-high eight kills while senior Eric Smith (Clay, NY/Cicero) added seven and led with two solo blocks.
With the win, Newbury improves to 10-4 while Daniel Webster drops to 3-4 on the season. The Nighthawks will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Mount Ida College for a tri-match against the Mustangs and the Regis College Pride.
