Nighthawks Edge Past Leopards, 3-1
The Newbury College men's volleyball team sent their three seniors out on positive note with a 3-1 victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology Thursday evening at Hellenic College. With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 22-10 (11-3 NECVA) while the Leopards fall to 9-11 (6-8 NECVA).
Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) was one of four Nighthawks with double digit kills leading the team with 18. The Nighthawks middle hitter also had a team-high three solo blocks and three assisted blocks. Senior Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic) followed Thomas with 14 kills and had a team-high five service aces to round out his regular season career at Newbury. Sophomore James Beck (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) continued his solid play with 13 kills and two assisted blocks.
The Wentworth Leopards were led by sophomore Javier Feliciano (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Nuestra Senora del Carmen) who had a game-high 28 kills along with three aces and two solo blocks. Fellow sophomore Alfredo Flores (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe) was also solid with eight kills and 10 defensive digs.
Newbury College would like to thank McDermand, Matthew Sadowski (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) and Tim MacMillan (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill) for all their hard work and dedication to the men's volleyball program and we wish them luck in their future endeavors.
The Nighthawks will host the inaugural NECC Championship Saturday afternoon where they will face the Lynx of Lesley University in the first semifinal match at 11:00am.
