Thomas Records 1000th Kill; Newbury Soars
Coming off their first place victory in the Gothic Knight Invitational, the Newbury men's volleyball team defeated the University of New Haven 3-1, Monday night. With the win, the Nighthawks improve to 13-1 on the season while the Chargers drop to 2-2.
Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) was two kills shy of 200 on the season and 21 kills from the 1,000-kill milestone of his three year career. The Wilbraham native easily attained the first feat in game one while the Chargers defeated the Nighthawks, 30-28. Newbury rebounded with a 30-23 win in game two and saw Thomas nail down the elusive milestone in a 30-20 victory in game three. The Nighthawks took the final game 30-16.
Thomas led Newbury with a match-high 24 kills and three solo blocks while junior Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) added two blocks of his own. Sophomore Max Daley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) assisted with four and senior Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic) led the team with a game-high three services aces.
The Chargers were led by junior Peter Kazlas (Allentown, PA/William Allen) who had a team-high 12 kills. Fellow classmate junior Julian du Pont (Westport, CT/Staples) contributed with ten in addition to a team-high two service aces.
Newbury looks to extend their winning streak to 12 games when they host the Emerson College Lions Thursday night at 7:00pm.
