Nighthawks Sweep Tri-Match

The Newbury College Men's Volleyball team hosted Emmanuel and Mount Ida Colleges for a tri-match today at Hellenic College.  The Nighthawks went 2-0 on the day - first defeating the Mustangs in three quick games and finishing with a thrilling five-game victory over the Saints. 

James Krizka (Buffalo Grove, IL/Buffalo Grove) and Josh Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) dominated the first match collecting 11 kills a piece.  The Nighthawks made quick work of the Mustangs in the first game, shutting them down 30-16; and battled in the final two games producing final scores of 30-24 and 30-22.

Following Emmanuel's 3-1 victory over Mount Ida, the Saints took on Newbury in the final match of the day.  The Nighthawks fell to 2-0 in the opening games losing by scores of 36-34 and 30-26, but rallied in the final three to come away with the win.  Key points were scored by Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) and Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic), who finished with 23 and 16 kills, respectively.  Aberly recorded 21 digs on the match, while setter Matt Talamantes (Sylmar, CA/Viewpoint) accumulated 55 assists. 

Newbury travels to Lasell College on Tuesday, January 27, 2009 for a match beginning at 7:00 PM.
