Nighthawks Defeat MIT; Claim first victory against Engineers since 2005
For the first time in four years, the Newbury College Nighthawks men's volleyball team defeated the Engineers from MIT with a 3-1 win. Newbury picks up their eighth win of the season, pushing their winning streak to six games.
Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional), led the Nighthawks with a game-high 19 kills and three solo blocks. He is now just 57 kills shy of the 1,000 milestone, which he is expected to reach later on this month. Senior Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic), followed Thomas with 18 kills of his own and two service aces while junior Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) tied Thomas with five assisted blocks. .
MIT was led by junior outside hitter Eric Reuland (Laguna Niguel, CA/Santa Margarita) who recorded 16 kills and a team high three solo blocks. Senior Scott Pollom (Indianapolis, IN/Cathedral) and junior Mike Demyttenaere (Brussels, Belgium/St. John's) followed up with 11 kills each. Demyttenaere also added two solo blocks and three assists.
Newbury returns to action Thursday evening when they travel into Boston to face the Wentworth Leopards in a NECVA match-up at 7:00 PM.
