Nighthawks Glide, Sweep Tri-Match
Newbury College defeats Lesley University, 3-0 (30-13, 30-11, 30-19)
The Newbury College men's volleyball team swept Lesley University and Southern Vermont College, 6-0, in Saturday afternoon's tri-match at Hellenic College. Freshman James Krizka (Buffalo Grove, IL/Buffalo Grove) sealed the first match against the Lynx with a kill to give the Nighthawks the 3-0 victory.
In game one, Newbury got off to a 9-1 run before Lesley mounted a comeback. But senior Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL/Montini Catholic) led the Nighthawks on a 6-0 run later in the game to take the first game. After finding themselves down 3-1 early in the second game, Newbury scored six unanswered points before taking the third game of the night.
Lesley University defeats Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-12, 30-26, 30-19)
Behind junior Nick Assad (Andover, MA/Andover), Lesley knocked off Southern Vermont 30-12, 30-26 and 30-23 in the second match of the day. After losing the game one, the Mountaineers jumped out to an early lead in games two and three but the Lynx chipped away at the deficit to pick up their third win of the season.
Newbury College defeats Southern Vermont College, 3-0 (30-8, 30-13, 30-12)
In the final game of the day, Newbury defeated Southern Vermont 3-0. Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) ended the second game strong with a kill to put the Nighthawks up 2-0. Krizka and fellow freshman Chris Chin (Brockton, MA/Brockton) also played well for the Nighthawks, picking up some key blocks in the match, in rout to the 3-0 victory.
With the two wins the Nighthawks improve to 20-10 (7-1 NECC, 9-3 NECVA) on the season, while the Lynx and Mountaineers fall to 3-17 and 2-15, respectively. Newbury will return to action on Tuesday when they face the Gulls of Endicott College at 7pm.
