Nighthawks Storm to Victory Over Gulls
The Newbury College men's volleyball team defeated Endicott College in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, 3-1. With the win the Nighthawks improve to 21-10 while the Gulls fall to 19-10.
Down by four in the fourth game it looked as if the match was going to a game five but that is when Newbury mounted their comeback. Sophomore James Beck (Havre de Grace, MD/Havre de Grace) was the sparkplug for the Nighthawks, guiding his teammates to the victory. Junior Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional) led Newbury with a game-high 21 kills while junior Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL/Palatine) recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 defensive digs. Beck finished the game second on the team with 15 kills.
Junior A.J. Witkofsky (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) led the Gulls with 18 kills while junior John Emery (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) followed with 13 kills. Senior Matt Carroll (West Hartford, CT/West Hartford) added a team-high nine defensive digs in the loss.
The Nighthawks will return to action on Thursday evening against the Wentworth Leopards, where Newbury will honor their three seniors as they compete in their final regular season game of the year, at 7:00 pm.
